Walney Island is a hidden coastal gem on the edge of Cumbria, offering beaches, wildlife, coastal walks and peaceful island surroundings. Connected to Barrow-in-Furness by bridge, it is easy to reach yet feels a world away — big skies, sea air and quiet shorelines in every direction.
Walney's beaches are the heart of a stay here. Earnse Bay on the island's western shore is a wide, breezy stretch of sand loved by walkers, kite flyers and families, with sunsets over the Irish Sea. Sandy Gap and the west shore offer more quiet spots for rock pooling and paddling.
A short drive from the apartments, Roanhead Beach is one of the most popular beach and walking locations in the area. Rolling dunes, soft sand and views across to Black Combe make it a favourite for long walks, picnics and photographs at golden hour.
South Walney Nature Reserve is a haven for nature, wildlife and birdwatching. Walk the trails between lagoons and dunes, watch seabirds and wading birds through the hides, look out for the grey seal colony offshore and take in sweeping coastal views from the island's southern tip.
Piel Island sits just off the tip of the peninsula, with its medieval castle ruins, historic pub and famous 'King of Piel'. Ferry trips run across the channel when operating, and even from the shore the walks and coastal views towards the island are memorable.
Walney is a great base for guests who want coast and countryside in the same holiday. The southern Lake District is close enough for easy day trips, so you can spend a morning on the fells or beside a lake and still be back by the sea for sunset.
